Anti-Jam Rings

The anti-jam rings highlighted here are manufactured for a defense industry client on an ongoing basis. Composed of Grade 13-8 heat-treated (H1025) stainless steel tubing, they are turned and milled to a diameter of 70 mm, a thickness of 5.4 mm and to tolerances of ±0.025 mm. This project seems simple enough; however the angles and breakpoints called out in the drawing required extensive calculations prior to beginning production. Because we specialize in complex precision machining, our staff possesses the required expertise to identify issues before they become problems.

Machining was performed on a CNC lathe and 3-axis vertical mill prior to passivation. Five-piece sample sets were sent to the customer from each lot to be evaluated prior to completion of the full run. In many cases, adjustments were required before completing the full set of rings. The rings were inspected through comparison to customer-provided redline prints and required the creation of custom ground anvils on the micrometer used to determine the product dimensions. Manufacturing is completed in lot sizes of 25 to 50 pieces (100+ per year) that are delivered to a Maryland destination within a period of six weeks after receipt of the order. This anti-jam ring plays a critical role in the customer’s application and an inferior piece crafted by another supplier caused a catastrophic failure in a previous installation.

At Andrew Tool & Machining, our years of experience as a provider of precision machining services allow us to deliver world-class machined products that have made us a preferred vendor for customers in a wide range of industries.
