A customer in the wireless communications and aerospace industries recently contracted us at Andrew Tool & Machining for the manufacturing of laminated stator stacks for use in one of their products. The stacks were created from bonded and laminated steel and were machined to dimensions of 3.6000″ diameter, 1.178″ in thickness, and to tolerances of +0.0000″/-0.0005″. The pieces were machined using wire electrical discharge machining (EDM), jig grinders, and outside diameter (OD) grinders. The surface of the stacks remained uncoated. The customer had very detailed inspection requirements and provided specific software to be utilized for conducting radial measurements during the testing and inspection process.
Frequent coordination was required to ensure that the finished product met the needs of the customer, involving extensive cooperation between the inspection and engineering departments of both companies. Lot sizes varied from 2 to 6 pieces, and were turned around and delivered to New York in a period of 4 to 6 weeks after receipt of order. This was a difficult project and required a steep learning curve on our part; its ultimate success is a testament to our flexibility and capacity to provide high-precision machining for virtually any requirement.
