Andrew Tool worked on parts for the Roman Space Telescope's primary instrument, known as the Wide-Field Instrument (WFI), offers an incredible range of capabilities. With WFI, users can enjoy wide-field imaging and multi-object, slitless spectroscopy, all within a field-of-view of 0.281 deg2. The design of this remarkable instrument includes an innovative 11-position element wheel assembly, along with 18 optical/NIR sensitive detectors that are meticulously mounted to a mosaic plate assembly. These detectors are seamlessly connected to the control electronics, creating a harmonious system. Additionally, WFI incorporates a relative calibration system, ensuring accurate and precise measurements. What sets WFI apart is its ability to not only collect scientific data, but also acquire guide star images simultaneously, enhancing the precision of fine pointing control.
